Recent Q&A
  • I am interviewing for a CAD design job in the woodworking industry. I have a few questions about 20/20.

1- How similar to AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT is it to use?

2- Can I get a usable trail copy to learn the system?

3- How much does the basic 20/20 cost?

You may respond to my questions at engdesigner1981@yahoo.com

I am sorry, but I haven't heard of the 20/20 software you are referring to.
  • I have a quick mvparts question.... I hope.

I'm using Autocad MEP 2010.  I wanted to add another grille size to my parts catalog, so I went into the ceiling grilles drawing and inserted one of the grille model blocks.  I then exploded it and created a new size block and named it accordingly.  I then went into Content Builder and added the new size block and used the "Generate blocks" button to create the rest of the views and so on.

Here's the problem.  Somewhere in the process of this, All of the insertion points for the grilles in that drawing were changed.  ???  So if I try to insert one of the ceiling grilles into my drawing, it's placed a good 20-30 feet away from the insertion point and the connection point.  Any idea of what I possibly could have done, or what I can do to fix this?

I am sorry, but I do not know the MEP product very well. You may want to try one of the discussion groups for an answer.
  • I work with a lot of multi-lines. They are great to manipulate if you need to hold the lines parrellel at all times. I use them for webbing in open web truss. The problem is, you can not read the actual length of the line without exploding it, which renders it useless. Is there a way to get the length, with a single pick? I know you can do "Distance", but you would still have to pick both ends. Any ideas?

    Thank You!

    Jamie Burnett:-)

I do not know of any way to do this off the top of my head, but if someone in your office is good with VBA, it should be fairly easy to write a Query tool that will display the length of the multiline, as well as other properties.
  • hey Felicia! just dropping by to say that folks are really lucky to have your time here this week! in fact its mighty generous of every Expert who's signed up here to be making time to help. thanks for doing so!

My pleasure, dave.  Thanks for the thanks!
  • Dear Felicia,

Actually I am going to offset helix with zero height as a spiral but nufortunatley when I want to do offset command software tells that both end are not in one plane and offset is not possbile while  I am pttung height zero and both end are in one plane!! Would you plaese help me how can i make spiral with 1 mm thickness.

    Thanks

  • Profile Picture

If you drew the spiral as a polyline, you can use the Express tools to flatten it in the Z direction before using the offset command.

Judging by the description you posted, it sounds like you might be better off picking up one of the mechanical design packages such as Inventor for these types of designs.  Unfortunately, I do not know that sotware very well, so cannot help further with that.

  • Hi

When inserting a block, and scaling x,y,z. Is there a way to scale to reference? I have an object that I want to scale unproportionately, and reference it to an object. What is the best way to do this?

  • Profile Picture
The best way to stretch a block disproportionally to a reference object is to set it up as a Dynamic Block.  Regular blocks can only be sized with different x, y, and z values at the time of insertion, so you might be able to do that using OSNAPs, but not using a Reference option or the Stretch command.
  • Felicia - I purchased an early version of AutoCAD LT - Release 2 - in about 1995 and used it for many years until moving away from design work.  Now that I have returned to the design field and have a need  for a 2D CAD system, is there some way I can upgrade this to a more modern version to run in Windows XP.   Thank you - John Oliver
  • Profile Picture
I do not believe there is any way you can upgrade a copy of AutoCAD LT that old, but I would check with your local Autodesk reseller.
  • whats the best way to understand xref files. I do not know how to bond them to my drawings. I also do not know how to create them...
  • Profile Picture

It will vary depending on which version of AutoCAD you are using.  There is a very good overview in the Help files that come with AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT, as well as tutorials on this and many other topics available at www.augi.com.  If, after reviewing the information available in these places, you still have questions, please let me know.

I am sorry, but I am not familiar with the graphics products such as Alias.

  • Thanks, the folder: Application Data\Autodesk\C3D2007\enu\Support\RegisteredTools isn't on the computer, and most certainly not in  All Uaers or the only other User Profile folder. It must be a bad intall? I was logged into the only user profile on the computer when I loaded ACAD and when I started it.
  • Profile Picture

Are your hidden folders turned on?  That folder does show up on my system, so I am not sure why it isn't on yours.  You may also want to check the setting for the Tool Palettes folder in your AutoCAD Options, or in the Windows Registry.

  • Greetings:

I have Autodesk Civil 3D 2007. While using Civil 3D for Autocad 2007, the Block Authoring Palettes Icons all give the message,"Unable to execute the Tool. Possible causes are: The tool is not registered properly, please check your installation. The tool is from another application and is incompatible with the current application."

Is the Dynamic Block feature not available with this program? I carefully reinstalled the program, and all else seems to function.

Thank you very much for  your consideration.

    Charlie

If you installed the program under one user profile and are trying to run it under another one, you may have this problem.  The easiest fix is to copy all of the tool palettes to the user profile under which you plan to use the software.  Tool palettes have the extension .atc and can be found here:

    C:\Documents andSettings\%UserName%\Application Data\Autodesk\C3D2007\enu\Support\RegisteredTools

  • I have to explode the drawing before i can do anything.  its then after that when i go to add or edit the lines that they only have one grip when that line is connected to an existing line.
  • Profile Picture
The first explode converts the block to separate entities.  Try exploding them a second time to see if it makes a difference.
  • the drawing was saved as a dxf, then i copied everything from the dxf and pasted in to a new dwg file.  these items in the AutoCAD 2009 were lines, however in the AutoCAD2010 verson when i go to end it or make a new line i only have one grip.
  • Profile Picture
Try exploding the objects in 2010 and see if that helps.
  • I am working on a drawing that used to be in canvas, I saved it as a dxf and now trying to make changes to the drawing. I have saved it as a dwg, however my lines only have one grip on one side. Also when I go to add another line that would be perpendicular to the first line it doesn’t recognize there is a line there. This also applies to my arcs, instead of having 3 spots where I can grab it and edit I only have one. and it’s in the form of an arrow. How to i change this?
  • Profile Picture
Is this a raster image saved as part of a DXF, or are these AutoCAD objects?  What version of AutoCAD are you using?
