Dear Mr. Qasim Khan, Is there any vavle catalogue for API standards, especially API 6A in Plant 3D? Could you pls help me to find them if it's there???
Many thanks in Advance...
Qasim Khan
Hi Gopikrishnan,
I don't see any catalogs for API standard. But I can certainly check with other team members who are more knowledgeable about it. I will get back to you soon.
I checked with one of our content experts and was told that we do not have too much API content. But there are some API valves in our AMSE catalogs. These are shipped with the product so no need to separately download. Please take a look and you may find the valves that you are looking for.

Hi Chris,
the commands such as assign tag, annotate etc are all context based i.e unless some P&ID entity is graphically selected, these will not show up in contextual menu.
Hope this helps.

I can not find a setting to make the Line Number callout text be generated on the ISO the same height as all of the other text. Is this something that will have to be edited in the isoconfig.xml? If so, which string of text is it found. FYI, I am an amateur at xml editing, but a fast learner.
Qasim Khan
Russell,
Please follow the following steps to change the Line number annotation text height.
1. Browse to Project Setup> Isometric DWG settings> Title Block and Display. Click on "setup Title Block" button.
2. Click on "Iso Themes" button in ribbon. This will open Iso themes dialog. Make sure that you are in "Default theme" tab.
3. change the value for Annotation Text field. I have shown this setting in the attachment picture as well.

Hi Qasim!
I am trying to define a new scale for ortho generation. (1:200) I see there is no value like that. But trying to add the value at "view scale" it looks it does not work.
How can I define this new value? Where is the table for editing?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Pablo,
I won't comment here since you have reported it as resolved in your later post.

Chris,
Thank you for the question. We do not currently support this functionality, and I am not at liberty to talk about future functionality or features of the programs.
You may want to participate in the beta program, where you can make suggestions like this while the product is under development.

Hi Qasim,
Question about AUTOCAD Plant3D and P&ID 2012:
I noticed that the Data Manager Report works for P&ID objects. It is possible to export the data to spreadsheet format and the changes can be imported and accepted into the CAD file. I understand that AutoCAD Plant 3D and AutoCAD P&ID use a file based database (SQLite) by default and that there are a few tutorials online demonstrating how to access the database through MS SQL Server. But my question is: can you advise how we can access the AutoCAD database through a smaller scale database (e.g. MS Access)? The goal is to be able to read and write to the CAD file (AutoCAD database) using MS Access.
Any help or direction is greatly appreciated. I look forward to your response. Thank you.
_Paul N.
Qasim Khan
Hi Paul,
There are two ways in which you could do this (as suggested by our database expert Sasha Nikolayev):
1. you may use data manager and export data to csv or excel format. Then import the excel or csv file into the MS Access (launch Access 2010, create new database, invoke "External Data" tab, click on Excel, you may use first option "import the source data into a new table...".
2. alternatively, you could install the ODBC driver (freeware and available on web). Launch Access 2010, create new database, invoke "External Data" tab, click on ODBC Database icon under Imprt & Link, you may use first option "import the source data into a new table. the source data will be the database files with extension *.dcf.
Note: we do not recommend that external tools like MS Access be used to modify our database as they may produce erroneous results. It is best to use these tools for read-only purposes.
GEORGES GENTEN
Hi Qasim,
I drew a simple straight pipe with a couple of DIN2633 flanges inside the pipe (e.g. 16HS01 catalog). I did some trials with DN32 to DN100 selecting « string type dimensions » in Isometric settings.
During ISO creation, I obtained quick and production Isometrics for both but :
- With DN50 and under : impossible to obtain the string dimensions (only overall dimension is drawn in ISO )
- With DN65 and upper : no problem, string dimensioning is correct
Could you explain me how to obtain correct string dimensions in all cases ?
Printscreens are available if needed, just let me know an email address to send it.
Thanks in advance.
Best regards
Qasim Khan
Hi Georges,
In metric unit project, 50 nominal size and below is considered small bore pipe by default. The dimensioning on small bore pipe is handled differently from regular pipe. For isometric dwg to show string dimension on small bore pipe, you need to do the following settings:
1. open Project Setup>Isometric Dwg Settings>Dimension
2. select "Small Bore Piping" from Iso Theme drop down
3. select String type dimensions (checkbox)
4. From under the Dimensioning behavior grid, select any components at which you want your string dimension to stop e.g, valves, Olets, etc. 5. Click Ok to close project setup.
6. Create an iso dwg for the style that you modified e.g Check_A2.
After doing this, you should be able to see string dimension on components with nominal size 50 or less.

Hi Qasim,
With reference to my question (#2) , I was asking because the menu has stopped working, I get the same shortcut menu on paper space and model space (even when a P&ID entity is selected). If I type in the command it works okay.
Thanks
Qasim Khan
Hi Chris,
Now it sounds more like a bug to me. Which P&ID release are you using? I can investigate it further for you once i know the release.

Dear Mr. Qasim Khan,
I installed yesterday Autocad Plant 3D 2013.I would like to get acquainted with the catalog builder to create a custom component. But I have a problem, Bitter to have chosen in the graphic tab "custom-Autocad DWG Block based graphics", when i select the dwg file containing blocks, i have the " ASM Message Initialization Failure" message error " Unable to find the .\fr-FR\asmm218res.dll file." When I click on OK the catalog builder shut down. I have this probleme every time I try to create a custom part.
Could you say to me of or comes the probleme ??
Thanks in advance
Qasim Khan
Hi Jerome,
From the error message about missing asmm218res.dll file, it seems like an installation issue. Or, it could be because the working directory for catalog builder isn't set to the AutoCAD install directory (it complains about ./fr-FR/…), or maybe catalog builder picks up the wrong locale here (fr-FR). Are you using the French Localized build on English OS?

Hi Qasim
I'm trying to make a custom valve in Spec Editor, but I have some problems getting it into the model.
I proceed as the following steps.
I convert a 3D .dwg to a block and use the PLANTPARTCONVERT command. Add 2 ports and save.
Then i create a new custom component in Spec Editor in a catalog, assign all necessary info, and add it to the spec.
I start Autocad Plant 2012 an it appears in the tool palette in the model, but i can't place it. The command line reads "Can't find symbol for specified part".
My guess is that some file is in the wrong place, and/or some file has a wrong name or is missing.
Is there a default path for custom catalogs? What is the structure of files and folders when doing this.
Thanks
Lars
Qasim Khan
Hi Lars,
If you are creating a new catalog, I’d recommend creating it in one of the existing CPAK folders. Also, create a directory named after the catalog next to the catalog (but without the .pcat extension) and also create the DWG/200/64/32 directories inside this directory.
Whenever a part family based on static blocks is added to the catalog, a new part family drawing should appear in the DWG folder. AutoCAD Plant 3d will look for this drawing when inserting these parts, so it must be available on the user’s machine. If it can’t find the DWG, it will complain as stated below.

Tracy Anderson
Hello, Qasim,
I am working with Plant 3D 2012.
I have a large number of valves located in a process
building all in Plant 3D. Last week I
was instructed to move the entire model.
Now when I list the valves in the Data Manager they are still listed at
their old X,Y,Z coordinates even after a refresh.
I moved the model a negative 17.88” in the “Z” and now a measurement
to one of the valves from 0,0,0 equals 314.38” in the “Z”, however in the Data
Manager it is still listed at 332.251846 in the “Z”
So, my question is, Is there any way to update the valve
listing in the Data Manager to reflect what I am measuring in the model?
Tracy.
Qasim Khan
Hi Tracy,
the coordinate (x,y,z) values for components that you see in data manager represents the location of that component's insertion point. The insertion point for valves is one of its end points and the value that you see in data manager is the location of that insertion point. The new location which measures 314.38" might not be the insertion point of your valve and may be thats why this value doesn't match with the one shown in data manager. So you might want to check the coordinates of the other end of the valve. My guess is that the coordinates for other end will match with data manager value of 332.251846.
As far as updating the value in data manager is concerned, I believe it should be automatic i.e it should get updated as soon as you move your model.
Hope this helps.

I seem not to be able to delete a Plant 3D valve. did audit, regen, auditproject but its still there. any ideas?
I already deleted the connecting pipe.
Qasim Khan
Hi Donald,
I would like to know few things to narrow down the problem.
1. Did you use keyborad button DELETE to delete the valve or erase command? after you tried deleting, did the program complain by thorwing any error or warning message? what happens afterwards?
2. Is your valve on a locked layer?
3. Do you have any xref in your model?
4. Is the valve a custom part created by you?

Hi Qasim,
I am using Plant design Suit 2012. We have just finishing P&IDs for one of the Project. Now my question is that, can we generate item list from those P&ID at this stage, of all the inline items like valves, reducer, strainer etc. If we can , than please tell us the steps.
Thanks
Qasim Khan
Hi Umesh,
Yes you can generate an item list for inline components. open data manager and select the "P&ID Project Data" or "Current drawing data" from drop down menu. Then select the "Inline Assets" node from the tree shown on left side of data manager. Then you may right-click and select Export command from contextual menu or just click on Export button on top of data manager. Select the Export settings (you may just want to keep the default selection which is "Displayed Data"). Select "Active node and all child nodes" to make sure all inline assets get exported. Then enter the file name and location for data export. Finally, click on Ok button. Doing this will export your inline components to an excel or csv file.

I have a little look at my setup files and I did not see any folder (fr-FR).
Can you tell me what I can get my catalog builder is working properly when I create the custom parts ?
Thank you in advance.
Qasim Khan
Jerome,
you could try to copy/paste en-EN folder and rename the new copied folder to fr-FR and then try your scenario. I am not sure how you got into that situation but you can try this workaround.

Qasim Khan
Russell,
by default the alignment is set to skewAligned in which the text will appear smaller than actual text height. To be able to see the same text height, open the Isoconfig.xml file for your iso style in xml editor, search for string "Line Number". Once you have found the Line shown below in xml file, change "Alignment="SkewAligned" to Alignment="FlatAligned" or to "Alignment="FlatHorizontal".
<LineNumberScheme Name="LineNumber" AnnotationStyle="Standard" Format="{0}-{1}" Alignment="SkewAligned" LeaderStyle="AsNeeded" ComponentFields="Size PIPING-SPEC" LineFields="PIPELINE-REFERENCE" ComponentFormat="{0}-{1}" LineFormat="{0}" />
After doing this, the line number text height will be same as that set for other annotations in default theme setup. But if you still want to use skewAligned, the text height will show smaller than the value set for other annotations. This is how this functionality is designed.

I am building piping spec for my next project. We have a spec with strainers, control valves and relief valves in it. I want to copy these to my new spec. They are NOT in any catalog.
How do I get fittings from one spec to another?
Or how do I get fittings from an pipe spec into a catalog?
Dave Moore
Qasim Khan
Dave,
We do not support copying of content from one spec to another as well as copying from spec to catalog. The best way to do this would be to create a new spec from existing. this option can be found in file menu "File>New>Create Spec from Existing...". This will create a new spec and bring in all the parts from old spec into the new spec.

Hi Qasim,
I cannot select the valve at all.
1. keyboard, command bar, toolbar, menu's all do not work, delete or erase, audit and re-audit, reboot, not even if I threaten it with a gun, cannot select part to get rid of it. It does have an eplaination mark ( ! ) that seems to go with it as well as 2 tear drops denoting that nothing is attached to it. Since I cannot select it there is no error or warning message. What happens afterwards is I want to take my gun and shoot myself.
2. All layers are unlocked
3. no xref's in model.
4. valve chosen from CS150 spec. Cannot select it so I am not sure which one but I think it is a BW ball valve.
hope this helps?

Dear Mr. Qasim, I
would like to export a piping layout as a solid model to be imported and used
as an asset within Autodesk Factory. I am having no success in doing so. Please
be so kind and advise.
Qasim Khan
Hi Douglas,
I am not familiar with that workflow. Are you trying to import plant dwg drawing in inventor? I know that inventor allows import of dwg files in an assembly. Did you try that? what result do you get.
There is no capability currently to import plant model as a one solid (that can only be done for Inventor assemblies). The only thing you could try is to bring in the whole model drawing.

I have AutoCAD MEP 2010, 2011, and 2012 on my computer, and am working in 2011. Recently, only lines and objects drawn in black or white plot crisply. Any colors appear screened. Clearly some setting has changed, perhaps when I downloaded 2012. Can you suggest settings to check? Thank you

Susan,
Is this problem related to Plant 3D?
From your problem description, it seems that the issue is related to MEP or AutoCAD. If yes, then you may want to post this issue on AutoCAD Ask the expert:

or you may want to post it on MEP discussions forum, if it is MEP related issue:

Dear Mr. Khan,
Thank you for the answer to question 7, the procedure works.
I can ask you another question:
I work on the same server with my co-worker and I would like to know the step necessary to work simultaneously on the same project (especially spec and catalog), because using the specs that I create myself, my co-worker does not have access to elements customparts I create in the catalog.
I look at the folders and saw that the blocks were creating for each share customs in a file folder under "AutoCAD Plant 3D 2013 Content" under c:.
How should we structure the project on the shared server for every two access (read and change, of course not simultaneously) in the same catalogs without losing data blocks create whenever we want to create a custom shares.
Thanks in advance.
Qasim Khan
Jerome,
You need to update your project specs by adding to them the newly created parts in catalog. The specs are in a project folder (...\Project Folder\Spec Sheets) which can be used by everyone working on the project. After the specs are updated, other users working on the same project will be able to see and use new parts.
Catalogs are not contained in project folder but instead on c: drive as you also mentioned. So, if you want your co-worker to make changes to the same catalog that you are also updating, you simply need to share it on some shared server/drive and give him access.

Donald Walker
Donald Walker here about my problem of not being able to delete a valve.
I could not delete it no matter what method I used. I could not even select it. However I did delete it. How I was able to do this I found by accident. I switched my view to "realistic" and when I did, by accident, I found I was able to select the valve and delete it.
I also found a flange that showed up in a iso but that I could not find it in the drawing, after doing an iso it kept showing up but I could not find it, it was imbedded in a pump equipment flange so you could not see it as it occupied the same geometry space, again by accident, as I could not find this flange any other way, 2D wire frame did not show it but I accidently found it when I switched to realistic mode and selected the pump where it showed the outline of the invisible imbedded flange. My iso works fine now.
I do not know if these problems are a software "glitch" or just me? but it is something to consider.
also again, I was not able to select various equipment in my drawing. Just like the unselectable valve. But again, when I switched to realistic mode I was able to select the equipment and again, I discovered this by accident. I do not know if it is intended by the software for equipment to only be selected this way?
Donald Walker
Qasim Khan
Hi Donald,
Sorry for the late reply. About the issue that you are noticing, certainly they are not intended behaviors. But it is difficult for me to investigate it with limited information about your machine configuration, other installed products, Hotfixes and SPs installed or not, etc.
I didn't see these issues on my machine. But definately we will keep an eye on such issues.

Hi Qasim.
I've been an AutoCad user for some 20 years. I recently switched over to Plant 3D, and just upgraded to 2013. However, i must admit that i am not using the software to its full capability. I used to do only 2D designs/presentation drawings of fuel reticulation and lube/oil projects. I need to go a few steps up.
What would you advise would be a good starting point in order to take the step up to Plant 3D, from a training perspective. If i can mention, that 3D drawings was never my strength. Any advise will be appreciated.

Lars Petersson
Hi again Qasim
Regarding Q:#12. I've succeeded in getting a custom valve into P3D, and also a icon on the tool palette. So far so good. However i still have some issues.
1. When i chose a block for the component, it renames it to a long random name which is saved next to the original .dwg. The preview is gone.
2. If i try to add a size, it always remains in the state 'undefined'. I fill in the sizes and Od and i have a .dwg for each size..
3. And often i can't change component in the catalog. It says 'You have made changes to the current component. Do you wish to save changes before proceeding?' and nothing happens. I have to restart the application or chose discard.
4. What to do with the .xml file that's created by the PLANTPARTCONVERT command?
I keep copies of the .png file both in the DWG folder and the 200 folder. They both seem to be necessary?
Thanks
Lars
Qasim Khan
Hi Lars,
Please see my replies to your questions below:
1. the long random name is the new drawing which used to store the block, it’s trying to give a unequal name like GUID. For the preview issue, please make sure there is a folder with the same name as the directory for saving the catalog.
2. the ‘undefinded’ is as design. you will have to manually fill in the new size ND and OD. For block-based components, each size needs a block, and all the blocks in a family will be stored in a drawing.
3. This is due to the modifications to the part properties. You will have to Save to Catalog before moving on to next family. Sometimes when you try to filter before creating new component, you don't see the newly created family. You could try filtering on short description that gets assigned to the new family after creation of new component.
4. the xml file is used to store the ports number and preview image info, which will be used when choosing a drawing to select blocks. you may just ignore it. But if you want to copy the drawing to another computer to continue the new block based component authoring, you can copy the xml and the png files which are generated when runing PlantPartConvert command.

Dear Khan,
We are facing a problem in generating isometrics from 3D model in 2012 version. Even in small pipe also it is splitting in to no.of files. some time it will go upto 20 files. In each file it will show only one elbow connected with both sided pipes. How can we replace the A2 title block with A0 or A1. In project setup, it is showing only A2, A3 Size. Please let me know how to control the splitting of single isometric.
Regards
Raghu.S
Qasim Khan
Raghunandan,
The program splits isometric into multiple sheets when your line contains too many components which cannot be accomodated on a single sheet. However, you can still control the sheet splitting with the following settings.
1. Invoke Iso tab in ribbon. click on Production iso button to open "Create Production Iso" dialog,
2. click on Advanced button to open "Advanced iso creation options" dialog,
3. move the slider to right-hand side to set the Level of congestion to more congested (see attached picture).
The result of this setting would be less number of sheets upon iso creation.
We only ship certain sizes (A2, A3) with our application. But users may create their own title blocks with different sizes.
To do this, you can start with any AutoCAD DWT file or modify the DWTs provided (A2, A3) in styles folder. You will then have
to add the table placement areas, drawing canvas area, and so on. Let me know if you need detailed steps to do this.

Qasim

Hello Franklin,
Yes, we support this workflow. But, for this to work, you will need to do some settings in project setup. Please follow the steps below and then try your scenario.
Steps:
1. Open project setup
2. Invoke Plant 3D DWG Settings, open connections, select Joint Settings.
3. Enable the checkbox "Enable Imperial to Metric connection control". see attached picture
4. Also in the simple joints grid enable the checkbox in "Allow Imperial-Metric" column. you will have to do this for the end types that you are using. see attached picture.
In the attached picture I have done this for BV and PL end types.
Hope this helps.

And 'possible to associate features isometric geometric primitives such as cylinders or other? Sleepers On 2013 there is also the option to enter the cloud of points but I can not recognize the softwere geometric primitives. The idea is to create primitives with softweres dedicated to the scanner and import them into your softwere in dwg format. How do I transform into a parametric element?
The application "isometric dwg" that transforms the elements laid out two-dimensional drawings into 3D only works for pipes or for other items?
Thank you in advance

Hi Thomas,
Currently, we do not support this functionality in Plant 3D. And for future, I am not at liberty to talk about if or when we will support it.

Dear Qasim,
I would like to know if new 3D models created at AutoCAD Plant 3D are size-adjustable. For example, can I create a valve which varies automatically its 3D model size according to its diameter?
Thank you very much in advance!
Best regards.
Qasim Khan
Hi Fernanda,
I am not sure if I understand your question right, so please correct me if I am wrong. It seems that you want to create fully parametric parts in order for the part size to adjust with the changing parameter (like valve diameter). I am afraid this is not currently supported.
If you want the valve size to adjust with changing diameter, you could achieve this through manually selecting both pipe and valve and then changing their sizes together in properties palette.

Hi Qasim,
I am having trouble with Plant 3D Pipeline tag.
Default Annotation style : 2"-CAJ-PW-1001

I went thru the Project Setup to create new pipeline tag format
and new annotation. But the drawing still shows the old style.

Hello Qasim,
do you see the issue of wrong orientation of stub-in pipes in iso representation (when the stub-in pipe don't form part of iso, it's cut pipe). Any solution from Autodesk?

Dear Mr. Khan
I have installed Plant 3D on a completely fresh computer in Technical university of dortmund, Germany. When I want to create new drawing it will give a fatal unhandled error. Please help me. there is no problem with download nor computer.
Thanks

Qasim Khan
Hi Pouria,
I am sure your machine is clean and am surprised that you are getting such an unhandled error. However, it would be difficult for me to diagnose this problem without some more details. So perhaps you could get back to me with answer to these questions:
1. what Operating System are you using?,
2. which other products are installed on your machine?,
3. are you using a Localized version (German version) of Plant 3D?,
4. Are you adding the drawing under "Plant 3D Drawings" node in project manager?.
I also recommend that you post this question on discussion forums so that others with similar problem could also help you resolve it.
http://autocad.autodesk.com/?nd=plant_forums
You might also want to install it on another machine to rule out the possibility of a machine issue.

Ron Couillard
Hello Sir,
I was wondering if you know of a way to scale pipes allready in a drawing. For example, if a A 8" pipe is coming in as 8.625mm instead of 219mm how can we scale that?
Thanks for your time.
Qasim Khan
Hi Ron,
My guess is that you are talking about the pipe size on orthographic drawing. The reason why 8" is seen as 8.625 on ortho drawing is that 8" is the nominal pipe size whereas 8.625 is the outer diameter in inches.
Hope this helps.

Dear Mr. Qasim Khan,
I need ur help in creating customized supports. We have our own Custom supports to be included in Plant 3D tool pallette. We created the blocks of the supports. But, when I wanted to add them in .acat, I am confused under what category I need to add them, like Fitting, Valves, Pipes, Miscellaneous etc... Kindly help me to solve the issue.
Many Thanks...
Qasim Khan
Hi Gopikrishnan,
When the pipe supports catalog is opened, the only available categories in S&C Editor are “Fittings” and four PartSubTypes Support, VerticalSupport, …).
In releases prior to the 2013 release, the pipe supports catalog role was very limited and it basically just served the purpose of providing some default values for parametric supports (no static block-based supports in the catalog). Also the support for static block-based supports has been rather limited in 2010-2012 releases, where you could use the “convert to support” mechanism. In new 2013 release, however, there is a much better support through pipe supports spec, which can contain both parametric supports and static block based supports.
Hope this helps.

Dear Mr.Khan
Thanks for helping me on the error. It turned out that the error was due to student version activation. my friends also have the same problem.
I have another question. I have some equipment and connetcing pipes in plant 3d - I will name it a module - I want to use this module many times in different drawings. Is it possible to create a new block from this module and every time using this block? or any similar solution
Regards
Pouria
Qasim Khan
Hi Pouria,
I am glad to know that you were able to resolve your issue through student version activation.
For your second question on model repetition, you could use autocad COPY command and then paste to place it anywhere in the model. Although quick and easy, this method will only work for model repetition in the same drawing.
Pipe components are currently not supported for Block/Insert procedure, i.e, if you create a BLOCK and INSERT it in a drawing, you will get broken connections between pipe components.
Hope this helps.

When creating a Quick Iso, it will split the selected line number into several sheets. No matter what the setting are set to. Plant will split from open pipe to flange or from flange to flange. In the "Advanced Iso Creation Options" i have checked the "Ignore Break Points from model", moved the slide bar all the way to more for the "Drawing congestion splitting", and checked "Force Iso onto one sheet". Also in the Project Properties Setup i have checked Overflow table on new drawing sheet. And, the line to be Isoed is completely connected.
Qasim Khan
Hi Isaac,
I was unable to recreate your issue on my machine with the amount of information that you have provided. I will need some more details from you to investigate this issue further. Is it possible for you to send me your drawing or PCF file? Also could you please provide more details such as:
1. Are you using Imperial or Metric project.
2. Which pipe specs are you using.
3. what are the various connection types in your model.
4. which style are you using to create isos. Using the default style "Spool" typically creates more sheets than other default styles.

Hi Qasim,
We have two engineering offices based in different city. I have copy a project folder from them, which was done in plant 3d 2012. I am trying to use that particular project specs on my system. But i am couldnt able to open it . Even though i try to creat new spec based on that project specs but spec editor get hang all the time doesnt go any further. Can you please tell me what could be the reason.
Thanks
Qasim Khan
Hi Umesh,
I can't think of a reason that would explain this behavior and it's hard for me to help you without knowing some more details about this issue. So perhaps you could answer the following questions for me:
1. How was the project created in your other engineering office. Was it created as a SQLite project or SQL Express project.
2. Could someone, in your other engineering office, try to open the same spec on their machine. Doing this will rule out the possibility of spec being bad.
3. Could you please provide the exact steps that you tried for opening the spec in the spec editor and for creating new spec from existing.
4. You mentioned that while trying to create new specs from existing your application hung. Did you get any warning or error message after that?
In addition to this, could you please try opening this spec on some other machine (preferably fresh machine).

Hi, Mr. Qasim,
i'm defining the DIN11850 catalog. As you know the pipe union is built of 4 pieces:1 male part, 1 female part, 1 nut and 1 gasket.
1) Which are the plant catalog parts that best fit male femal and nuit in order to get the right result?
2) which End Type should be used for these parts?
The nut is always connected to the male whilts the gasket to the female.
Therefore when inserting the male the system should insert all 4 parts but deleting the female afterword only the the gasket has to be deleted and male and nut have to stay.
thanks, mauro
Qasim Khan
Hi Mauro,
Union is treated as an entity in Plant 3D and not as a part made up of several individual sub-entities. You may refer to the union class in ASME Pipes and Fittings catalog for reference.

Hi,
I have some question:
In branch table in Spec Editor i have type of connection between two pipe tee, olet and pipe... i undarstand but if i dont select type of connect ( just blanc field) why pipe connect each other with stub in (joint) i dont specyfiy connetion so in my opinion Autocad Plant 3D should not connect this. The pipe to pipe connection is default ?
thx for answer
Qasim Khan
Hi there,
The stub-in connection is established by default when you try to branch bigger-size pipes (bigger nominal diameter) with smaller ones. This behavior is as-designed in the piping connections feature. However, you could always delete this connection manually if you don't want it in your design.
Hope this helps.

Dear Mr. Khan,
I am having a problem with running Isometric Drawings in Plant 2011. We have tracked down the problem and has discovered when trying to label the pipe and assigning it its proper tag, what comes up in the "Line Number Tag" changes it to "Unassigned" so it never appears in the "Isometric DWG" tab in the project manager so we can run the ISO. The tag line has it labeled correctly in the properties just not in the "Line Number Tag". The tag is visible in the drop down list for "Line Number Tag" and when trying to do Line to Pipe with that tag it still shows up unassigned. Do you have any thoughts on how to fix this and thanks in for the assistance.
Qasim Khan
Hi Chris,
The problem of Line Numbers not showing up in project manager could be a tree refresh issue. However, you can manually refresh the tree view to show new line numbers. This refresh can be done by clicking on the "Group by Line number" button which is located on top of project manager's Isometric DWg tab view.
If the line number changes to unassigned then it is more than just a refresh issue. Usually this happens if you
create a line number but do not place any pipes or fittings for that line number. I will need to have your exact steps by which you created your Line number to investigate this further.
Hope this helps.

Hi Qasim
I am currently coverting my specs from AutoPlant into Plant 3D. Now when I try and bring in a coupling or any other component that uses a coupling I recieve an error saying "can;t find symbol for specified part". I have edited the lengths of the couplings because they werent maching, it made no difference. I am not using these specs through a server. They are on my local drive and the catalog file and any other files created during the conversion are placed in the same directory. Is this a common error? How can I fix this?
Qasim Khan
Hi Tarryn,
Did you change any of the AutoPLANT to Plant 3D mapping information?
Usually when we see this error “Can’t find symbol for specified part”, it means that either the script that is being used to draw the Coupling is incorrect or the parameters are incorrect.
It will be great if you could share the spec with just a Coupling in it and I can have someone take a look at it.

Hi Qasim
When I am placing an elbow from my specs I recieve and error. How ever when I am placing my pipes and i turn at a 90 degree angle Plant 3D automatically puts in an elbow for me. The Elbow that it put in however is not from my active spec. Where is this elbow coming from?
Qasim Khan
Hi Tarryn,
The error that you receive could be due to the missing elbow size in your spec.
The elbow that the application automatically puts in for you comes from the same spec that you must have used to route the pipe.
Hope this helps.

Hi Tomaso,
In Plant 3D, we do not support *.pxf file format but we do support *.pcf file which can be used as an input to create piping isometric drawing.
I am unable to help you regarding LFM program. Your best bet would be to check with that company's product support about the details and the different CAD systems they support. I believe they support integration with most popular CAD programs.

Hi!
Where should I put my money to get the best possible performance out of Plant 3D 2013 , CPU or GPU?
Recommended hardware for best possible performance?
Fast cpu or many cores?
Harware acceleration on or off? (with quadro 4000)
Br
Matias
Qasim Khan
Hi Robert,
You may refer to the minimum system requirements at: http://images.autodesk.com/adsk/files/autocad_plant_3d_2013_system_requirements_.pdf
Since these are only the minimum system requirements, the more you can invest in both CPU and GPU the better performance you can get.
We do not recommend turning ON hardware acceleration in Plant 3D 2013 and the prior releases. The reason for this is its adverse effects on performance.
Hope this helps.

Mr. Qasim Khan,
Is there a way to cut structure grating or to trim grating around a pipe that is going through the grating?
Thank you in advance.
Qasim Khan
Hi Nick,
You can use PLANTSTEELTRIM command to cut your structure at the point of clash with pipe. But you will not be able to select the pipe directly as a limit up to which to cut the member. Instead, you may define a plane parallel to pipe through various methods: 3 Points, 2 Points, etc. This command is also available in ribbon's Structure tab.
Please see the attached picture for more details.
Currently, there is no functionality to create opening in the structure for pipe to penetrate.
Hope this helps.

Hi Qasim
I am busy setting up the mapping for when I convert my
AutoPlant specs to AutoCAD Plant 3D.
Now when I enter a script name in the "AutoPLANT to Plant 3D Mapping" dialogue box in the AutoCAD Plant 3D Spec editor. I always receive the error “Please enter a valid name”. The script name is the
name I want, it is taken from the "Create New Component" Dialogue box, in the Spec editor, Once I have chosen the correct image for this specific component. Is there some sort of configuration I need to do before entering
this script name???
Qasim Khan
Hi Tarryn,
This is a defect in the 2013 release. But the good news is that you can work-around this problem and don’t have to revert back to 2012.
Here is the current workaround:
1. Browse to ACAD exe directory
2. Open ATPtoP3DGeometryMapping.xml in notepad or an XML editor
3. Search for AT_PLUG in this file.
4. Add the following snippet within the <ScriptMapCollection> … </ScriptMapCollection > tag:
<P3dScriptMatch>
<Name>CYLSTACK003</Name>
<PropertyValues>
<string>SCF</string>
</PropertyValues>
<GeomPropertyPairCollection>
</GeomPropertyPairCollection>
</P3dScriptMatch>
This just adds a new geometry mapping for the AT_PLUG part type. The dimension mappings still need to be
done.
5. Open the Spec & Catalog Editor and browse to the AutoPLANT conversion settings.
6. Now, you should be able to see the new CYLSTACK003 <-> SCF mapping.
7. Fill the geometric dimensions mappings in the list and try the mapping again.
Hope this helps.
