  • 02-08-2010 01:52pmQuestion #1
I am working on a drawing that used to be in canvas, I saved it as a dxf and now trying to make changes to the drawing. I have saved it as a dwg, however my lines only have one grip on one side. Also when I go to add another line that would be perpendicular to the first line it doesn’t recognize there is a line there. This also applies to my arcs, instead of having 3 spots where I can grab it and edit I only have one. and it’s in the form of an arrow. How to i change this?
    • February 08 2010Reply to Question #1
Is this a raster image saved as part of a DXF, or are these AutoCAD objects?  What version of AutoCAD are you using?
  • 02-08-2010 01:57pmQuestion #2
the drawing was saved as a dxf, then i copied everything from the dxf and pasted in to a new dwg file.  these items in the AutoCAD 2009 were lines, however in the AutoCAD2010 verson when i go to end it or make a new line i only have one grip.
    • February 08 2010Reply to Question #2
Try exploding the objects in 2010 and see if that helps.
  • 02-08-2010 02:04pmQuestion #3
I have to explode the drawing before i can do anything.  its then after that when i go to add or edit the lines that they only have one grip when that line is connected to an existing line.
    • February 08 2010Reply to Question #3
The first explode converts the block to separate entities.  Try exploding them a second time to see if it makes a difference.
  • 02-08-2010 02:18pmQuestion #4

    Greetings:

I have Autodesk Civil 3D 2007. While using Civil 3D for Autocad 2007, the Block Authoring Palettes Icons all give the message,"Unable to execute the Tool. Possible causes are: The tool is not registered properly, please check your installation. The tool is from another application and is incompatible with the current application."

Is the Dynamic Block feature not available with this program? I carefully reinstalled the program, and all else seems to function.

Thank you very much for  your consideration.

    Charlie

    • February 08 2010Reply to Question #4

If you installed the program under one user profile and are trying to run it under another one, you may have this problem.  The easiest fix is to copy all of the tool palettes to the user profile under which you plan to use the software.  Tool palettes have the extension .atc and can be found here:

      C:\Documents andSettings\%UserName%\Application Data\Autodesk\C3D2007\enu\Support\RegisteredTools

  • 02-08-2010 04:07pmQuestion #5
Thanks, the folder: Application Data\Autodesk\C3D2007\enu\Support\RegisteredTools isn't on the computer, and most certainly not in  All Uaers or the only other User Profile folder. It must be a bad intall? I was logged into the only user profile on the computer when I loaded ACAD and when I started it.
    • February 08 2010Reply to Question #5

Are your hidden folders turned on?  That folder does show up on my system, so I am not sure why it isn't on yours.  You may also want to check the setting for the Tool Palettes folder in your AutoCAD Options, or in the Windows Registry.

  • 02-08-2010 06:59pmQuestion #7
whats the best way to understand xref files. I do not know how to bond them to my drawings. I also do not know how to create them...
    • February 08 2010Reply to Question #7

It will vary depending on which version of AutoCAD you are using.  There is a very good overview in the Help files that come with AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT, as well as tutorials on this and many other topics available at www.augi.com.  If, after reviewing the information available in these places, you still have questions, please let me know.

  • 02-08-2010 08:13pmQuestion #8
Felicia - I purchased an early version of AutoCAD LT - Release 2 - in about 1995 and used it for many years until moving away from design work.  Now that I have returned to the design field and have a need  for a 2D CAD system, is there some way I can upgrade this to a more modern version to run in Windows XP.   Thank you - John Oliver
    • February 08 2010Reply to Question #8
I do not believe there is any way you can upgrade a copy of AutoCAD LT that old, but I would check with your local Autodesk reseller.
  • 02-09-2010 06:06amQuestion #9

    Hi

When inserting a block, and scaling x,y,z. Is there a way to scale to reference? I have an object that I want to scale unproportionately, and reference it to an object. What is the best way to do this?

    • February 09 2010Reply to Question #9
The best way to stretch a block disproportionally to a reference object is to set it up as a Dynamic Block.  Regular blocks can only be sized with different x, y, and z values at the time of insertion, so you might be able to do that using OSNAPs, but not using a Reference option or the Stretch command.
  • 02-09-2010 12:22pmQuestion #10

    Dear Felicia,

Actually I am going to offset helix with zero height as a spiral but nufortunatley when I want to do offset command software tells that both end are not in one plane and offset is not possbile while  I am pttung height zero and both end are in one plane!! Would you plaese help me how can i make spiral with 1 mm thickness.

    Thanks

    • February 09 2010Reply to Question #10

If you drew the spiral as a polyline, you can use the Express tools to flatten it in the Z direction before using the offset command.

Judging by the description you posted, it sounds like you might be better off picking up one of the mechanical design packages such as Inventor for these types of designs.  Unfortunately, I do not know that sotware very well, so cannot help further with that.

  • 02-09-2010 01:30pmQuestion #12

I work with a lot of multi-lines. They are great to manipulate if you need to hold the lines parrellel at all times. I use them for webbing in open web truss. The problem is, you can not read the actual length of the line without exploding it, which renders it useless. Is there a way to get the length, with a single pick? I know you can do "Distance", but you would still have to pick both ends. Any ideas?

    Thank You!

    • February 09 2010Reply to Question #12
I do not know of any way to do this off the top of my head, but if someone in your office is good with VBA, it should be fairly easy to write a Query tool that will display the length of the multiline, as well as other properties.
  • 02-09-2010 03:28pmQuestion #13

I have a quick mvparts question.... I hope.

I'm using Autocad MEP 2010.  I wanted to add another grille size to my parts catalog, so I went into the ceiling grilles drawing and inserted one of the grille model blocks.  I then exploded it and created a new size block and named it accordingly.  I then went into Content Builder and added the new size block and used the "Generate blocks" button to create the rest of the views and so on.

Here's the problem.  Somewhere in the process of this, All of the insertion points for the grilles in that drawing were changed.  ???  So if I try to insert one of the ceiling grilles into my drawing, it's placed a good 20-30 feet away from the insertion point and the connection point.  Any idea of what I possibly could have done, or what I can do to fix this?

    • February 09 2010Reply to Question #13
I am sorry, but I do not know the MEP product very well. You may want to try one of the discussion groups for an answer.
  • 02-09-2010 06:09pmQuestion #14

I am interviewing for a CAD design job in the woodworking industry. I have a few questions about 20/20.

1- How similar to AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT is it to use?

2- Can I get a usable trail copy to learn the system?

3- How much does the basic 20/20 cost?

You may respond to my questions at engdesigner1981@yahoo.com

    • February 09 2010Reply to Question #14
I am sorry, but I haven't heard of the 20/20 software you are referring to.
  • 02-10-2010 12:08amQuestion #15

AutoCad 2006 use to create a blk template file to be use with the attribute extraction wizard.  The AutoCad 2009 doesn't appear to use generate this template, although if you had one it will use it.  How do I go about creating a new blk template or editing that one that I have from my 2006 version.  I am looking to add a few more blocks and update the path so that it saves in a new directory.

Thanks, your response will be greatly appreciated.

    • February 10 2010Reply to Question #15

Autodesk redid the attribute extraction process to be more interactive and dynamic.  As such, you can now create DXE files that save what were template files for attribute extraction with a few extra options.  If you are using the ribbon in 2009, it is under the Linking & Extraction panel of the Blocks & Reference tab.  There are several tutorials, as well as a New Features Workshop video, on how to use this feature.

  • 02-10-2010 08:53amQuestion #16

    Hi Felicia:

A coworker came to me with a problem about image frames plotting when they should not (imageframe set to 0 or 2).  After trying several things, I noticed it only happens in viewports that have been "rotated" by the DVIEW command.  I tried creating a rotated UCS to get the rotation, but that didn't work.  I tried bringing the images in with an xref instead of directly, that alos didn't work.  The files are "ECW".  This is in Autocad Map 2009.  This happens when plotting full size to an HP 1050c plotter, but not at half size to a Xerox printer.

Thanks and its good to talk to you again.

    • February 10 2010Reply to Question #16

      Aloha Joe!

It sounds like that is a plotter driver issue.  You may want to check and see if there is any difference when using the driver from Autodesk, or the one from HP.  You could also try using a generic driver rather than the one specific to the 1050c to see if that makes a difference.

  • 02-10-2010 09:23amQuestion #17
We just recently went through a PC deploy and had our machines re-imaged. Unfortunately, the two machines that had our two licensed copies of AutoCAD 2010 was never un-registered. Now when we try to install the full versions back on the newly imaged machines, it will not allow us to. We can only install a 30 day trial. Is there a way to reset the registration for two licenses?
    • February 10 2010Reply to Question #17
The best way to resolve this is to contact the reseller where you originally bought the software.  They should be able to help you re-register the software properly.
  • 02-10-2010 09:52amQuestion #18
We are working with Autocad to create technical 2-D plans (food industry, for labels, cups, boxes and similar applications) that well then be sent to Graphic design agencies to create the graphics. We realised, when they work with the plans in Illustrator (MAC system), that the dimensions are not the same. Do you know about this problem? Do you have a solution on this. We tried all interchangeable files like *.eps or *.dxf but all have the same problem.
    • February 10 2010Reply to Question #18
I haven't heard of that problem before, but it may have to do with how you bring the AutoCAD information into Illustrator.  Are you creating a new file in Illustrator and importing the file, or are you opening the file directly in Illustrator?  I have seen in other graphics programs an issue where when the file is imported, the current settings override those from the imported information.
  • 02-10-2010 10:12amQuestion #19

    Hi Felicia,

Is using CAP Studio similar to using Revit Architecture?

    • February 10 2010Reply to Question #19
I am sorry, I haven't heard of the CAP Studio program before.
  • 02-10-2010 01:01pmQuestion #20
Does Autocad Architecture have shrubbery or flowers to use for the 3d renderings?  I am new to the whole rendering thing and I am trying to make the site and house look more life like.  Any suggestions?
    • February 10 2010Reply to Question #20

I believe there are just a few sample blocks that come with the software, but there are many resources that provide more for a relatively low cost.  I do not want to promote any single product, but many of the on-line magazines and groups such as AUGI do reviews of these types of things.

  • 02-10-2010 03:09pmQuestion #21
I want to freeze out layers in the layout tabs without changing the model or other layout pages..... what do I need to do?
    • February 10 2010Reply to Question #21
The only way to do this is to use viewports and Freeze or Thaw layers either in the current viewport, or in future viewports.  To Freeze a layer in the current viewport, create a viewport and go into paperspace within that viewport.  Access the Layer Properties Manager and choose the Freeze/Thaw in Current Viewport option.  You may have to scroll to the right in the Layer Properties Manager to see this option.

hi, i have autocad 2009, trying to download the trial alias sketch add on for autocad, but after downloading it itells me folder is invalid or corrupted. what do i do?

    thanks.

    • February 10 2010Reply to Question #22
You may want to check your permissions on the computer before downloading and installing the software.  There may also be firewall settings on your computer you should check.
  • 02-10-2010 06:34pmQuestion #23

Thanks for your answer. We are loading the file into Illustrator and open it there. When we create a square with the same size as the one in AutoCad, the square created in Illustrator is different, and what makes it worse, the ratio is changed. So for example a square of 20 x 30 mm (= a barcode size) will end in Illustrator as something like 19,9858 x 30,0153 mm. Any idea, where this could come from? We tried all formats from conversion into *.pdf files, *.dxf, *.eps we tried different "print sizes" on different paper and all end up with DIFFERENT dimensions. Any lead would be very helpful.

    Thanks for your tine

    • February 10 2010Reply to Question #23
If it is generating different sizes for different file types, it may be something to do with the version of Illustrator you are using.  Try generating one of the files you mentioned in a program other than AutoCAD (such as MS Word) and see if you have the same problem.  If it works fine coming from Word, then it is most likely an AutoCAD issue.  If you have the same problem with other programs, you may have to contact Adobe to find out what is happening.

  • 02-10-2010 11:39pmQuestion #26

I am looking to make sure that there is a process or software package to transfer a Pro-E model into AutoCAD and then if necessary transfer the AutoCAD model back into Pro-E.

    1. 1.  Can this be done directly through Pro-E and AutoCAD?
    2. 2.  Is there a standalone software package that will do and will this standalone package be able to do it in a batch manner?

    Thank you for you help.

    • February 11 2010Reply to Question #26

I am sorry, but I am not as familiar with the various manufacturing software packages out there, but I am pretty sure there are ways to import and export these files using one of the alternative file formats supported by AutoCAD.  You may want to check in with one of the Discussion Groups that discuss manufacturing specifically.

  • 02-11-2010 05:34amQuestion #27

i was wondering if you knew what i need to download to view cadduct duct work on drawings using AutoCAD LT 2009

    Aron

    • February 11 2010Reply to Question #27

I haven't used Cadduct myself, but you will probably need to save the file either as a DWG or DXF in order to be able to work with it in AutoCAD LT 2009.

  • 02-11-2010 09:26amQuestion #28

    Hi Felicia,

I am trying to get drawings from AutoCAD LT 2009 into Word, to creat a catalog.  I have plotted the file to a jpg, but the lines are very light.  What can I do to fix that problem or is there another way to get files into Word?

    Thanks,

    Kathy

    • February 11 2010Reply to Question #28
Instead of plotting to a JPG, use the Export tool to save the elements of the drawing you wish to bring into Word as a WMF (Windows Metafile).  These are vector graphics files developed specifically for Office applications (you may know them as Clip Art).  In Word, depending on the version you are using, you can go to the Insert -> Picture -> From File command to import the WMF file.  Please note, the WMF will use the colors (if any) and extents of screen as part of the file.  In other words, check your layer settings and zoom up as close as possible before exporting your images.
  • 02-11-2010 10:37amQuestion #29

    Hi Felicia,

I am working on a 3d rendering of a house.  I am new to rendering. I have created a material that is basically a white brick and applied it to the walls of the house, in model space i can see the material well, however when I render all i can see is white.  How do I make the material render like it looks in model space? Also, I am having trouble with the whole lighting issue...everything that I print out is some hue of green or gray...is there some special way to print out renderings a little more true to color?

    Thanks for your help,

    Jennifer

    • February 11 2010Reply to Question #29
I am sorry, but I do not use the Rendering tools very much.  I would recommend checking out some of the tutorials on the AUGI website for tips and tricks on setting up lighting, and the Autodesk Discussion Groups for specific details on setting up custom materials such that they render properly.
  • 02-11-2010 01:15pmQuestion #30
I just installed AUTOCAD LT 2010.  Using classic mode.  How do I change the background color from white to black?
    • February 11 2010Reply to Question #30
Right-click anywhere in the drawing area and choose Options.  You should be viewing the Display tab of the Options dialog, but if not, switch to that tab.  There will be a button for changing the screen colors, and one of the options on that dialog will be for the backgrounds in the Model tab, or on the Layout tabs.
  • 02-11-2010 02:56pmQuestion #31

I use a 16 button mouse/puck on a CadPro tablet.  When I customize the buttons Autocad 2010 doesn't remember them.  After customizing them I click apply they are there but when i click OK to close. The buttons revert to something else.  I have changed them in both the legsacy tablet and mouse button fields but they will not keep.  Is the CadPro tablet compatible with ACAD 2010

    • February 11 2010Reply to Question #31

Are you using the CUI to customize the mouse buttons, or a driver that comes with the tablet?  You may have to contact the manufacturer of the tablet to see if they have an updated driver for your device.

If you are simply upgrading or replacing a computer, you should be able to install and authorize your copy of AutoCAD.  If you do have problems during the registration process, contact whoever you bought the software from and they should be able to contact Autodesk and let them know the re-authorization is legitimate.

As a side note, have you disabled proxy graphics on that computer?  That may cause the problem.

    • February 12 2010Reply to Question #35
There may be some custom shape/font files (*.shx) out there that will do this, although I cannot think of any right off the bat, so you may have to search a bit.  One other thing you may want to try is to create the labels as multi-line text and use the options to set the background of the text to white, which will create a wipeout effect around the text above the imagery.

  • 02-12-2010 07:16pmQuestion #40

I need to find out the number of instances of the same block inserted in my drawing.

    I use AutoCAD 2007 & AutoCAD 2009

    Please help.

    • February 12 2010Reply to Question #40
If it is a specific block you are trying to track, the easiest way to do this in AutoCAD 2007 or 2009 is by using the Filter options.  Bring up the Properties palette and in the upper right corner, choose the Quick Select button.  In the Quick Select dialog box, change the Object Type to Block Reference, choose the Name property, and use the Value drop-down list to choose the block name you want to count.  Click OK and the object reference drop-down at the top of the Properties palette will show the number of instances of that block in parantheses.  If there is no number listed, there is either only one instance of that block, or it isn't inserted in the current space (model or paper).
