Recent Q&A
  • Hi Freddy, is there a new command similar to the old Pack N Go command of "yester-release"?
  • we lost our install cd for autocad 2007 5-seat version how do we go about getting a replacement?
  • Hi Freddy..do you know if you can use AutoCAD Free Bonus Tool Drawing Tabs "MDITabs": with 2010LT please?
  • In AutoCAD 2009 I was able to open a drawing as read only by right clicking on the file from the recently opened documents located in the menu browser. In 2010 I can no longer do this. Why did they drop this handy utility and can we get it back?

David...try this ..In an update to the ribbon, the menu browser is gone. Instead, when you click the red A (now called the Application Button), the Application menu appears with only file-related commands. Still need the menu? Set the MENUBAR system variable to 1 to get the old menu bar at the top. Remember that you can customize the user interface with the CUI command, so you can always add toolbars to the ribbon interface. Also, you can customize the ribbon itself.
  • Great Interview and thanks for taking the time. How do you handle the user’s customizations with AECOM's customizations so that there are no conflicts? Which takes priority?
  • Profile Picture
Ted, Thank you..The CUI is locked down for that very purpose..to have the company standards overide any funky user customizations..this is handled only by cad administrators.
  • How do you handle the world of 3D modeling (BIM)? Any advise?

Bridget Great question..with regards to future of 3d modeling? Reality check its here!!..its been here, only now its gotten alot smarter, especially with Revit. Smarter Models produce smarter drawings & faster solutions to design problems. One thing to note the learning curve will be the biggest hurdle at first along with getting it past management. You need that first test project ( a small one if possible) to kick around and find out what the benefits are to BIM (Building Information Modeling). i strongly recommend going on to the autodesk website and explore more about it and even download a 30 day trial of Revit so you can see that its not just 2D world anymore
  • In your role at AECOM how do you enforce standards? How do you handle renegade CAD managers who do not follow the standards?
  • Profile Picture
Stephan..Great question..well the way we enforce company standards is by utilizing our pulldown menus that we have here at AECOM. These pull down menus eliminate the bad habbits renegade cad users try to slip by the cad managers. The pull down menus are a set of point and click menus that has the Text hights and layesr for each discipline. Structural, Mechanical, Civil, Electrical and so on. Also integrated standard title sheets and blocks (section marks, titles..etc) having these available are essential to renegade cad users from deviating from the company standards. Once the users see how easy it is to start a drawing and have all the essential tools they need to get going. Another cool way of enforcing standards is to have routine audits of thier drawings using the cad standards checker (DWS) that ships with AutCAD. What should a CAD Standard cover? Here is a brief list of the major topics that should be covered by every CAD Standard. 10 Essentials The list below is what I consider the essentials. These issues need to be fully defined and articulated. Go to whatever lengths to get these outlined completely to provide efficiency for your company. 1. Standard Folders - names, locations, relationships, contents. 2. Project Names - numbering, names. 3. File Names - Complete definition, how they are created, what folder they go in. 4. Layer Names, Line styles, Pen Weights, Styles. 5. Pen Tables - CTB, STB. 6. Lettering Fonts and Sizes - when used, fonts, style names. 7. Dimension Styles - Exact names, all terms defined. 8. Drafting Symbols - Basic symbology. 9. Xref Usage - naming, content, attachment methods. 10. Layout tabs - names, format, page setup. Well these are but some of the key elements to enforcing standards..hope this works for you
